What does PDF cropping actually do?

PDF cropping adjusts the crop box — the visible area that PDF viewers display. The content outside the crop area is hidden, not deleted. This is useful for removing excess whitespace, scanner borders, or oversized margins from scanned documents.

If you want to permanently remove content or change the physical page size, you need a full PDF editor. For simply adjusting page dimensions to a standard size, try Scale PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping delete content?

No. PDF cropping changes the visible area (crop box) but hides, not removes, the underlying content. If you open the cropped PDF in a different viewer the hidden content may be visible again.

Can I crop specific pages only?

This tool applies the same crop margins to all pages. For page-specific control you would need a more advanced PDF editor.

What units are used for crop values?

Crop values are entered in PDF points (1 point = 1/72 inch). An A4 page is 595 × 842 points.

Are my files private?

Yes. Cropping happens entirely in your browser using pdf-lib. Your PDF never leaves your device.
